Use of Modal Verb: CAN

MODAL VERB (verbo modal)

CAN : Podemos usar CAN para permisos y expresar habilidades. Significa: PODER. Examples: 

• That baby CAN crawl. (Ese bebe puede gatear)
• I CAN drive very fast (Yo puedo conducir muy rápido)
• You CAN play chess (Tú puedes jugar ajedrez)
• My brother CAN’T finish this now (Mi hermano no puede terminar esto ahora)
• CAN We tell you something? (¿Podemos decirte algo?)
• CAN She go out tonight? (¿Puede salir ella ésta noche?)

1. Expresar habilidad        Linda has a talent for Languages. She can speak Spanish, English,

 2. Otorgar y pedir permiso Tina:    Can I go to Billy’s birthday party?

                                             Mom:  Yes, of course You can.

3. Expresar prohibición    You can’t go to the playground until you finish

         (en negativo)               Your homework.

4. Expresar posibilidad     Your computer can be fixed but you will need a good Technician.

5. Ofrecer ayuda o pedir    I can help you with your homework after class.
